The irony is that I run a group therapy session for veterans devoted to anger management, and still sometimes mine gets the best of me. I know, it doesn’t make any sense. There is a school of thought in psychology that preaches prophylactic intervention. You recognize the potential for a detrimental tendency—fear, rage, dishonesty—and you confront it by repeatedly re-creating the situation instead of avoiding it. Holy Chip is a perfect example.

A lot of shrinks would simply tell him to avoid gambling of any sort. That’s a simple solution, but I assume that his problem is symptomatic of something deeper. If it had to do with anything but gambling, I would say that he should confront the issue in therapy or analysis sessions. But even though I am a huge proponent of the therapeutic process, I would lean toward abstention rather than retribution. He should flat-out abstain from any competition involving money. He gets really depressed when he doesn’t win the lottery. It’s very deep-seated. I’m not sure the impact poker or gambling has on the personality can ever be altered. I say that because I was—as part of my Ph.D.—subjected to years of therapy and analysis, and my problem has, if anything, gotten worse.
